Betterment Projects is a social network used to document ongoing improvement and the continued individual project need, both large and small, of the Virgin Island Communities. This site is a place to celebrate the hard work of volunteer efforts that help clean up and rebuild the territories after two devastating Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Betterment Projects is a user friendly social network and open forum for individuals to post their hard work and ongoing needs. No one can help until every need is understood so let's get that assessed and then lets see documentation of progress. Please post what you need, what you would like to see happen, and what you have done. Encouragement for others is always celebrated.
The St. John Angel Network was developed to aid nonprofit organizations on island in connecting with volunteers, donors and other resources so that they may best serve the community in their impact area. Whether you're an agency in need of an Angel, or would like to be one, we encourage you to register and explore the many opportunities to connect.
Long Term Recovery Teams are unique and reflect local needs, available resources, cultural diversity, leadership style, and community support. The goal is to unite recovery resources with community needs in order to ensure that even the most vulnerable in the community recover from disaster. Recovery is not only about the restoration of structures, systems, and services although they are critical. A successful recovery is also about individuals and families being able to rebound from their losses, and sustain their physical, social, economic and spiritual "well-being." The goal of recovery is to bring a community back to a new normal after it has been devastated by a disaster.
St. John is a small, idyllic U.S. Virgin Island located in the Leeward Island chain of the Caribbean Sea. Only 20 square miles in size, three-quarters of the island is the Virgin Islands National Park, protecting the island's beautiful, undeveloped beaches, forests, coral reefs, mangroves, and natural habitats, both underwater and above ground. St. John, along with its population and rich biodiversity, was severely impacted and sustained catastrophic damage inflicted by back-to-back category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.
The St. John Community Foundation has successfully been carrying out the mission of providing services and supporting programs that positively engage people, build resources and strengthen the St. John community since 1989! We continuously look for ways to fill service gaps and cultivate community assets including people, organizations, programs, and resources to effectively respond to changing needs of the community now and for future generations.
SJCF was formed just after the devastation that hurricane Hugo inflicted on St. John. Back in 1989, few community groups existed on St. John that had the capacity to help an entire community recover from the massive destruction caused by Hugo. Through community commitment toward a common goal, the St. John Community Foundation was born.
Through the years, SJCF has provided numerous programs which have enhanced the lives of the residents of our beautiful island and the visitors who come to enjoy all St. John has to offer. After-school programs, anti-crime initiatives, festivals, senior and youth programs, community facility enhancements, recycling, political forums and community sports and arts programs are just some of the many programs supported by SJCF. More programs are coming-programs which will help every citizen. We hope you will be involved as we move forward in making St. John a model community.
